A map showing the major structures of the Orion Arm. The big white blob in the middle is the Local Bubble, a cavity of the Orion Arm. Our solar system lies in the middle of it, inside a 10 parsec red cube (called sector 0,0,0) which you can see by turning the opacity of the Local Bubble down to 0. Two other known cavities - Loop I and Superbubble GSH 238+00+09 are connected to the Local Bubble through tunnels. Only part of the Loop I bubble has been mapped, so the structures you see when you click the "Arm Structure" button are purely speculative, their real structure is unknown. I haven't added Loop II, III or IV because I couldn't find any accurate information about their size and location. The bubbles are marked with a light teal color. The Local Bubble is surrounded by Molecular Clouds, which are marked with a violet color. Two unknown regions have been added with a light teal color because that's what I made out of the maps in the 3D mapping of the dense interstellar gas around the Local Bubble paper by R. Lallement, B. Y. Welsh, J. L. Vergely, F. Crifo and D. Sfeir (2003). |
